A comparison of abundance estimators for small mammal populations Rev. Bras. Zool.
Pacheco,Marcelle; Kajin,Maja; Gentile,Rosana; Zangrandi,Priscilla L.; Vieira,Marcus V.; Cerqueira,Rui.
A major difficulty in the application of probabilistic models to estimations of mammal abundance is obtaining a data set that meets all of the assumptions of the model. In this paper, we evaluated the concordance correlation among three population size estimators, the minimum number alive (MNA), jackknife and the model suggested by the selection algorithm in CAPTURE (the best-fit model), using long-term data on three Brazilian small mammal species obtained from three different studies. The concordance correlation coefficients between the abundance estimates indicated that the probabilistic and enumeration estimators were highly correlated, giving concordant population estimates, except for one species in one of the studies. The results indicate the...

Bark consumption by the spiny rat Euryzygomatomys spinosus (G. Fischer) (Echimyidae) on a Pinus taeda Linnaeus (Pinaceae) plantation in South Brazil Zoologia
Gonçalves,Gislene L.; Faria-Correa,Mariana A.; Cunha,Adriano S.; Freitas,Thales R. O..
Feeding damage caused by Euryzygomatomys spinosus (G. Fischer, 1814) (Echimyidae) is documented for a Pinus taeda Linnaeus (Pinaceae) plantation located in Cambará do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Under laboratory conditions, feeding acceptance of P. taeda trunk sections was tested with positive results for E. spinosus, but not for other three co-occurring sigmodontine rodents: Akodon montensis Thomas, 1913, Oligoryzomys nigripes (Olfers, 1818) and Delomys dorsalis (Hensel, 1872).

Description of the karyotype of Rhagomys rufescens Thomas, 1886 (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) from Southern Brazil Atlantic forest Genet. Mol. Biol.
Testoni,André Filipe; Althoff,Sérgio Luiz; Nascimento,André Paulo; Steiner-Souza,Francisco; Sbalqueiro,Ives José.
Rhagomys rufescens (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) is an endemic species of the Atlantic forest from Southern and Southeastern Brazil. Some authors consider Rhagomys as part of the tribe Thomasomyini; but its phylogenetic relationships remain unclear. Chromosomal studies on eight specimens of Rhagomys rufescens revealed a diploid number of 2n = 36 and a number of autosome arms FN = 50. GTG, CBG and Ag-NOR banding and CMA3/DAPI staining were performed on metaphase chromosomes. Eight biarmed and nine acrocentric pairs were found in the karyotype of this species. The X and Y chromosomes were both acrocentric. Most of the autosomes and the sex chromosomes showed positive C-bands in the pericentromeric region. The X chromosome showed an additional heterochromatic...

Development of Adrenal Glands from the Embryonic Phase to Puberty in Spix’s Yellow-toothed Cavies (Galea spixii, Wagler, 1831) BABT
Lobo,Luis Miguel; Santos,Amílton Cesar dos; Oliveira,Moacir Franco de; Assis-Neto,Antônio Chaves.
ABSTRACT Several authors have underscored the importance of establishing parameters in morphological development by gender comparison to establish clinical and pre-clinical assays through the use of experimental models. Current research compares the morphometry of right and left adrenal glands of males and females and describes differentiation of the cortex and medulla tissue during the embryonic, pre-puberty and puberty phases in Spix´s yellow-toothed cavies. Embryos aged 22 (22D), 25 (25D), 30 (30D), 40 (44D) and >50 (50D) days of gestation and neonates aged 15 (15DPN) (DPN= Days postnatal), 30 (30DPN) and 90 (90DPN) days after birth were analyzed. Comparisons included morphometric and histological analysis in all periods described. When compared the...

Differencial efficiency of two sampling methods in capturing non-volant small mammals in an area in eastern Amazonia Acta Amazonica
ARDENTE,Natália Carneiro; FERREGUETTI,Átilla Colombo; GETTINGER,Donald; LEAL,Pricila; MARTINS-HATANO,Fernanda; BERGALLO,Helena Godoy.
ABSTRACT This study was the first to evaluate the efficiency of trapping methods in the study of small mammals in the Carajás National Forest, southeastern Brazilian Amazon. It is an area with a unique vegetation type (metalofilic savannah or Canga). The aims of this study were to compare the efficiency of two trapping methods (i.e. live-traps and pitfalls), the bait types used, and evaluate if trapping success varied seasonally. We used four sampling grids, each with six parallel transects. The trap effort for live-traps and pitfalls was 51,840 trap*nights and 10,800 bucket*nights, respectively. We used three types of bait: a paste of peanut butter and sardines, bacon, and bananas. We placed one type of bait in each trap, alternating between points. We...

Diversity of small land mammals in a subtropical Atlantic forest in the western region of the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Maestri,Renan; Galiano,Daniel; Kubiak,Bruno Busnello; Marinho,Jorge Reppold.
Small land mammals possess features that significantly influence the dynamics of ecosystems and participate in various levels of the food web. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest the richness of these animals is high, which makes them even more ecologically and numerically relevant in this environment. In this context, we investigated the species composition of small mammals in an unexplored area of southern Brazil, and compared the species composition of this area with other Atlantic Forest regions in order to understand how this community is related to others. The study area was located in an interior Atlantic forest formation, at a transition region between deciduous and Araucaria forests. Small mammals were captured at five collection points using pitfall...

Effect of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) plantations on individual-level diet variation of Hylaeamys megacephalus (G. Fisher 1814) (Rodentia, Cricetidae) in eastern Amazon Forest Biota Neotropica
Pena,Simone Almeida; Mendes-Oliveira,Ana Cristina.
Abstract: In this study we described the diet of Hylaeamys megacephalus (G. Fisher, 1814) and investigated the degree of individual variation in the diet of this species among the Amazon Forest and the oil palm plantation. We analyzed the stomach contents of 36 individuals, of whom 11 were collected in the forest and 25 captured in the palm oil palm plantation. The H. megacephalus diet consisted of 18 food items, of which 12 were animal composition and eight were vegetable composition. The niche amplitude of the species was narrower in the forest area (Baforest = 0.013) compared to the palm tree plantation area (Bapalm = 0.478). This shows that individuals have greater niche overlap in forest areas, while in the plantation areas the animals expand their...

Estimating body mass of fossil rodents Naturalis
Freudenthal, M.; Martín-Suárez, E..
Reconstructing the body mass of a fossil animal is an essential step toward understanding its palaeoecological role. Length × width (L×W) of the first lower molar (m1) is frequently used as a proxy for body mass in fossil mammals. However, among rodents, Muroidea have no premolar and an elongated m1, whereas other groups have a premolar and a m1 that is not elongated. This leads to an overestimation of body mass in muroids and/or an underestimation in other rodents. To solve this problem we assembled data of upper and lower tooth row length and body mass in extant rodents, and calculated regression equations for all rodents, rodents with premolars, rodents without premolars and for taxonomic groups at superfamily or family level. Data for complete tooth...

Estimating head and body length in fossil rodents Naturalis
Freudenthal, M.; Martín-Suárez, E..
We present estimates for head and body length (HBL) of fossil rodents. We assembled HBL data and tooth row length data (LTR, UTR) for a large number of extant rodents, and calculated regression lines of HBL on LTR and UTR for all rodents together (all-rodents equation), and for separate taxonomic groups (family equations). In fossil rodents, data for complete tooth rows are scarce, therefore we use the sum of the lengths of the teeth (LRsum, URsum) as a surrogate for tooth row length. The relation between this parameter and real tooth row length (LTR, UTR) is calculated on the basis of a number of populations for which both parameters are available. We estimate HBL of fossil rodents, using LRsum and URsum and the regression lines of extant rodents, and we...

Formas de abertura dos frutos de Syagrus romanzoffiana (Chamisso) glassman efetuadas por Sciurus ingrami Thomas (Rodentia, Sciuridae) Zoologia
Bordignon,Marcelo; Margarido,Teresa Cristina C; Lange,Rogério R.
In this work was identifyed the diferents opening forms of the palm nuts Syagrus romanzoffiana by brazilian squirrel Sciurus ingrami in four diferents points of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Was caracterized tive basic forms of opening, in acording with the number of incisions and opening aspects. The form with lower number of incisions (two) was also the greather frequently in the four points sampled (66,25%; N = 5194) well as registred the lower opening time (7,2 ± 1,7 min) in relationship with other forms (9,2 ± 2,3 min). To explicate the diferences in the frequences of forms discovered, is proposed "apprenticeship's hypothesis" which the young squirrels of the population, along the opening nuts apprenticeship, to passing of the forms with larger number of...

Hidden heterochromatin: characterization in the Rodentia species Cricetus cricetus, Peromyscus eremicus (Cricetidae) and Praomys tullbergi (Muridae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Paço,Ana; Adega,Filomena; Guedes-Pinto,Henrique; Chaves,Raquel.
The use of in situ restriction endonuclease (RE) (which cleaves DNA at specific sequences) digestion has proven to be a useful technique in improving the dissection of constitutive heterochromatin (CH), and in the understanding of the CH evolution in different genomes. In the present work we describe in detail the CH of the three Rodentia species, Cricetus cricetus, Peromyscus eremicus (family Cricetidae) and Praomys tullbergi (family Muridae) using a panel of seven REs followed by C-banding. Comparison of the amount, distribution and molecular nature of C-positive heterochromatin revealed molecular heterogeneity in the heterochromatin of the three species. The large number of subclasses of CH identified in Praomys tullbergi chromosomes indicated that the...

Karyological geographic variation of Oligoryzomys nigripes Olfers, 1818 (Rodentia, Cricetidae) from Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Paresque,Roberta; Silva,Maria José de Jesus; Yonenaga-Yassuda,Yatiyo; Fagundes,Valéria.
The karyotypes of 85 specimens of Oligoryzomys nigripes (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) collected in the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest of seven states of Brazil were analyzed. Eighty four specimens presented a karyotype with 2n = 62 and one individual had 2n = 61 due to a monosomy of the X chromosome. High levels of intra- and inter-population karyotypic variability, due to sex chromosomes heteromorphisms and pericentric inversions in four autosomes (pairs 2, 3, 4 and 8), led to a variation of the autosomal arm numbers (fundamental number, FN) from 78 to 82. Synaptonemal complex analyses revealed normal meiosis in males heterozygous for pericentric inversions. We found 39 different cytotypes, 27 of which are herein described for the first time. A literature survey...

MANDIBULAR ALLOMETRY IN HYDROCHOERUS HYDROCHAERIS (LINNAEUS, 1766) (HYDROCHERINAE, CAVIIDAE) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
PARÉS-CASANOVA,PERE MIQUEL.
ABSTRACT The mammalian masticatory apparatus is a highly plastic region of the skull and thus subjected to singular ontogenetic trajectories. Here we present the first descriptive allometric pattern study of mandible among the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), based on the study of 37 specimens. Allometric changes in shape were analyzed using geometric morphometrics techniques and the pattern of allometry was visualized. A multivariate regression of the shape component on size, estimated by the logarithm of centroid size, appeared as highly significant. Therefore, a major component of shape variation in these mandibles is related to the attainment of adult size (i.e., growth).
